Tips for the Acids and Bases Exam.
- There is usually four questions
- You are tested on:
- Atomic Structure - so know the difference between an ion and an atom, understand how to balance chemical formulae, know how to write the electron configuration, be able to explain why the electron configuration of an atom is different from an ion but the protons stay the same so it gives the ion a charge, know the names of the ions. etc.
- Acids and bases - know why they are an acid or a base, know the names of the acids and bases, be able to explain neutralisation reactions, know the colours of the pH scale for acids and bases,
- Reaction Rates - be able to explain the collision theory, what are the ways you can change the rate of a reaction, be able to explain how you can measure the rate of a reaction i.e. how fast a reactant disappears, how much gas is produce etc.
- Investigation reactions or the formation of a salt - this will involve an acid base reaction, you will probably have to write a balanced formulae and a balanced chemical equation, you may have to design a method to test the reaction, you may have to write an aim.
